president plans to arrest Goodluck Jonathan and Tompolo

Tompolo has been hiding since he was accused of fraud by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Former Niger Delta militant, Government “Tompolo” Ekpemupolo has said that the Federal Government is planning to arrest former president, Goodluck Jonathan.

Tompolo said further, during an interview with Sahara Reporters, that the FG is trying to use him to get through to Jonathan.

This survey has been done every five years since 1987. At the time, the subjects who said that they had no partner stood at 48.6 percent and 39.5 percent for men and women respectively.

Despite all this, nearly 90 percent of the respondents said they want to get married “sometime in the future.”

“They want to tie the knot eventually. But they tend to put it off as they have gaps between their ideals and the reality,” said Futoshi Ishii, head of the NIPSSR’s population dynamics research department.

18 Nigerians died in the just concluded hajj in Saudi

Eighteen Nigerians died at the just concluded 2016 Hajj in Saudi Arabia, the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has said.

According to the body, the victims were from Kwara, Kogi, Bauchi, Taraba, Niger, Kaduna and the FCT.

Researchers in a paper published by the Molecular Psychiatry journal said: ‘Highly significant associations were observed between the cognitive test scores in the UK Biobank sample and many polygenic profile scores, including; intracranial volume, infant head circumference and childhood cognitive ability.’

Professor Ian Deary, of Edinburgh University, who is leading the research, said gene variants were also strongly associated with intelligence.

The new evidence is so accurate that experts claim it could even predict how likely it was that a baby would go to university based on their DNA.

kidnappers demand N1.2bn to release Lagos landlords

The kidnappers of four residents of Lekki Gardens in Isheri, a border community between Lagos and Ogun states, weekend, demanded N1.2 billion ransom for their release.

Vanguard gathered that they made contacts with family members of the victims, suspected to be held hostage in the creeks, yesterday.

The victims, Mr. Kennedy Ucheagwu, Dr. Omololu, Bello and Mr. Esang, said to be landlords at Oshorun Heritage Estate, had gone for an aerobic section, Saturday, when eight masked gunmen in military camouflage intercepted them, shooting sporadically.

While others managed to escape, same could not be said for the victims, as they were whisked away in boats through the waterways.

One of the relatives of the abducted men, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Vanguard yesterday: “I got a call very early yesterday, where the unknown caller informed that he was one of the kidnappers that took our people away on Saturday.

“He warned that in our interest and for the safety of the victims, we should not contact the police or try to play smart.

“He said anything of such would lead to the death of our people. He did not allow me to speak with my person, as he claimed that he was sleeping.

“He said that we should get N1.2 billion before they would be released. He also told me to meet with relatives of the other people. He called back about four hours later to find out if the money was ready.

“He also asked if I had my own N300 million for the release my relation. I begged him to accept N200,000, as that was the only money we could afford, except he wants us to go and start borrowing or sell our property.

“But the line went dead at that point. Where do we get that kind of money at this time? My worry is that my relative is hypertensive.”

Meanwhile, Assistant Inspector-General of Police in-charge of Zone 2 Command, Lagos, Abdulmajid Ali, has deployed a Tactical Rescue Team to rescue the victims.

Alli explained that the team comprised police operatives and ICT experts from the Lagos and Ogun states commands, as well as those from the Force headquarters, Abuja. The team, according to Ali, who condemned the act, had been directed to rescue the victims unhurt as well as arrest perpetrators of the act.

He assured the affected relatives and residents of the area of timely and successful rescue operation, adding that police had clues.

Ali also appealed to relations of the victims to support police with useful information that would enhance the rescue operation, adding that he was working with the Commissioners of Police in Lagos and Ogun states and other stakeholders to ensure the rescue of the victims and to sustain the fight against crimes within the commands

Buhari spent up to N20m in ear surgery

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, says President Muhammadu Buhari spent less than £50,000 (N20.5m) on the treatment of an ear infection in the United Kingdom.

Shehu said this in a Facebook post on Sunday night while responding to an allegation by Prof. Farooq Kperogi that Buhari spent £6m during his treatment in June.

The President’s spokesman said Buhari’s government believed in accountability and curbing waste. Shehu said the Presidency had approved over £50,000 for the President’s treatment but Buhari rejected it.

He said, “The disclosure on Prof. Farooq Kperogi’s wall that President Muhammadu Buhari’s ear treatment in the United Kingdom cost a whopping £6m must have shocked many of the respected scholar’s followers.

“I’m prepared to share documents with Farooq, one of the brightest ever produced from the Bayero University Kano that the whole treatment, including a follow-up visit by a specialist to Nigeria didn’t cost £50,000.

“For the records, the administration advanced a higher sum, but the President’s doctor returned the balance to the treasury.

“Indeed, it’s a New Day, and President Buhari’s change mantra is real. Let no one confuse my fellow countrymen and women.”

Shehu made an indirect jibe at Dame Patience Jonathan – wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan – who claimed that the $15m found in some company accounts was for her medical treatment. He added that President Buhari would have rejected the bill if the doctor had charged him £6m.

He added, “The story reads like an incredible tale by moonlight that belongs to a different era, which fortunately is now history. That’s when a fortunate lady saved $15m for medical treatment!

“But was it possible that the account of this balanced journalism teacher was hacked? I will give him the benefit of the doubt.

“Given the austere President we have, Muhammadu Buhari would not have approved this amount if he was shown a £6m bill. I won’t be surprised if the President may have asked if the fat bill was for the purchase of a brand new pair of ears

university sacks 11 corps and 24 other staff

The Federal University, Lafia (FULAFIA) has terminated the appointment of 11 retained corps members and 24 others of its non-teaching staff over the inability of the institution to pay their salaries.

This was disclosed by the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Mohammed Sanusi-Liman while speaking with newsmen on Sunday in Lafia.

According to the VC, the council took the decision due to paucity of funds, adding that the affected staff, who were employed by the institution earlier in the year, comprised 11 retained corps members and 24 others.

He said the council had directed the management to source for funds and pay off the affected staff since they had worked for over five months without being paid.

“It would be inhuman to keep the staff working when we cannot pay them giving our poor budget and that is why the council decided that we should pay them off,” he said.

Mohammed Sanusi-Liman noted that the university has consistently encountered a shortfall of over N38 million in its allocation for several months, which had adversely affected the running of the institution.

He also confirmed that the management had uncovered a job racketeering syndicate in the university, which had offered illegal employment to some persons.

“When we got wind of the matter, the management set up an investigative committee which turned in a report that was submitted to the council.

“The university council referred the matter to its disciplinary committee for investigation and appropriate action,’’ he added

six notorious robbers nabbed in Enugu

The Enugu State Police Command has arrested six notorious bandits that have been terrorising the residents of Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of the State.

Mr Ebere Amaraizu, the command’s spokesman told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday that items recovered from the bandits included locally made guns and two short axes. He said other items recovered were TV sets, DVDs, standing fans, six handsets suspected to have been stolen from their victims.

Amaraizu said that the gang was rounded up by the police following a tip-off from some members of the public.

“The police operatives in Adani Division in the early hours of Saturday, Sept. 10 nabbed six notorious armed bandits. They have been terrorising the residents of Opanda, Nimbo and Adani communities in Uzo-Uwani LGA of the state and its environs.
“Suspects, name withheld, are helping the police in their investigations in relations to their alleged nefarious activities.

“Their activities ranges from armed robbery and burglary among others,’’ he said.

The police spokesman, however, said that the command had launched a manhunt on the remaining gang members.

Thousands Of Workers Recruited By Jonathan May Lose Their Jobs

The jobs of 4,904 civil servants, who were recruited by the Federal Civil Service Commission in the last administration of President Goodluck Jonathan, are under threat as the Federal Character Commission has queried the exercise.

It was revealed that moves by the Federal Civil Service Commission to sack the workers had led to a crisis in the civil service.

No fewer than 247 of the affected workers had petitioned the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) over a plan by the Commission to sack them.

The Ag Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission, Dr. Shettima Abba, had queried the Chairman of the FCSC, Mrs. Joan Ayo, for alleged violation of the principle of federal character in the employment of the civil servants in a letter dated May 3, 2016.

He said the recruitment, which took place between 2013 and 2015, was characterised by a flagrant abuse of the Federal Character principle.

Abba alleged that the recruitment was tilted in favour of the South-South geopolitical zone against other parts of the country.

He pointed out that the South-South got 33.6 per cent of those employed as against the 26.2 per cent allotted to applicants from for the North-East, North-West and North-Central geopolitical zones.

He directed the civil service commission’s boss to ensure that the perceived inequality is addressed in the 2016 recruitment by the commission in accordance with the provisions of Federal Character.

Abba stated, “The Federal Character Commission has viewed and observed with concern the recruitment exercises undertaken by the Federal Civil Service between 2013 and 2015, which glaringly is lopsided and grossly abused the principle of Federal Character to which all institution have subscribed.

“The recruitment which recorded the engagement of about 4,904 workers, threw away all common sense and wisdom of national cohesion and integration by favouring some states to the detriment of others.

“We are worried that if this trend is allowed to continue, then some sections of the country may not only feel alienated but may feel insecure by the action of people in authority.

“It is inconceivable and a gross injustice for a geopolitical zone to be allocated 33.6 per cent of the total candidates recruited as against 26.2 per cent for three zones combined, North-East, North-West and North-Central.

“We further request without prejudice that all processes must involve the Federal Character Commission for advice and strict adherence to the principle of federal character as contained in our circular on guidelines and procedure for recruitment.”

It was that the ICPC intervened in the matter following a protest by 247 of the workers whose jobs were allegedly declared irregular, null and void by the chairman of the FCSC.

A top source at the commission said the ICPC interrogated the chairman of the commission and other top officials to defend allegations that they violated Federal Character in the last recruitment.

The ICPC had intervened following a staff audit by the FCSC in which it took a decision to sack the affected federal workers.

Consequently, agitated workers wrote the ICPC, alleging that the move to sack them was based on ethnic consideration and a plot to cover up fraud and irregularities in previous employments undertaken by the commission.

The workers showed documentary evidence of exchange of letters between the commission and the office of the Accountant General of the Federation in which the appointments were authenticated.

But spokesperson for the FCSC, Dr. Abel Oruche, told Punch that only those employed irregularly would be removed.

Sources say there are obvious cases of gross violation of the Federal Character principle.
