Muhammadu Jibrilla, the governor of Adamawa State, has donated N5 million to a patient, Isa Hamma, whose kidney allegedly disappeared under mysterious circumstances.
Hamma is currently on dialysis at the Federal Medical Centre Yola, where he has been receiving medical care since his kidney was removed last month at the Jimeta Clinic and Maternity.
The payment is for the surgery for another kidney transplant in Kano.
The governor, while presenting the cash to the victim at his hospital bed at Federal Medical Centre, Yola, said the gesture was based on “humanitarian ground,” Leadership reports.
“I decided to assist the patient with N5 million the cost of the kidney transplant to be performed in Kano and it is personal based on humanitarian ground,” he said.
Jibrilla lauded the action taken by both the security agents and the National Medical Association to sanction the doctor and his hospital adding that government will await outcome of the committee earlier put in place by the ministry on the matter.
Commissioner of Health, Dr. Fatima Atiku, thanked the governor for the show of concern saying the action has given hope to the patient and his family.
The State chairman of Nigeria Medical Association, Dr. Adiel Apagu had earlier said N5million is required for the kidney transplant and assured that all other actions will be taken to ensure that the patient gets attention as soon as he reaches Kano for the transplant.
Dr Apagu told the governor that the patient will be accompanied by four other relatives for the medical personnel to check their compatibility before transplant is undertaken on the patient.
The patient, Isa Hamma, thanked the governor for offering assistance to him for the kidney transplant adding that the gesture has given him hope.
Similarly, Sani Mohammed from Jalingo, Taraba State has offered to donate his kidney to the ailing Isa Hamma.
Mohammed said he was deeply touched when he heard about the condition of the patient and decided to offer the assistance to enable him survive and continue with his normal life.
“I don’t know the patient or his relations, I heared about it over the media when I was in Kaduna and decided to come to Yola and offer the assistance needed by the patient,” he added
